Daily Bread: Luke 10

=E2=80=
=9CAfter this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by =
two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He tol=
d them, =E2=80=9CThe harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask t=
he Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest f=
ield. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a pur=
se or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. =E2=80=9CWhen =
you enter a house, first say, =E2=80=98Peace to this house.=E2=80=99 If s=
omeone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not,=
it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they giv=
e you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house t=
o house. =E2=80=9CWhen you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is off=
ered to you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, =E2=80=98The king=
dom of God has come near to you.=E2=80=99 But when you enter a town and a=
re not welcomed, go into its streets and say, =E2=80=98Even the dust of y=
our town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: =
The kingdom of God has come near.=E2=80=99 I tell you, it will be more be=
arable on that day for Sodom than for that town. =E2=80=9CWoe to you, Cho=
razin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in =
you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long a=
go, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable for Tyre=
and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be =
lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. =E2=80=9CWhoever li=
stens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever r=
ejects me rejects him who sent me.=E2=80=9D The seventy-two returned with=
joy and said, =E2=80=9CLord, even the demons submit to us in your name.=E2=
=80=9D He replied, =E2=80=9CI saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. =
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to over=
come all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not r=
ejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are wr=
itten in heaven.=E2=80=9D At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Hol=
y Spirit, said, =E2=80=9CI praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, =
because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revea=
led them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleas=
ed to do. =E2=80=9CAll things have been committed to me by my Father. No =
one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Fath=
er is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.=E2=80=
=9D Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, =E2=80=9CBlessed =
are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and=
kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what yo=
u hear but did not hear it.=E2=80=9D On one occasion an expert in the law=
stood up to test Jesus. =E2=80=9CTeacher,=E2=80=9D he asked, =E2=80=9Cwh=
at must I do to inherit eternal life?=E2=80=9D =E2=80=9CWhat is written i=
n the Law?=E2=80=9D he replied. =E2=80=9CHow do you read it?=E2=80=9D He =
answered, =E2=80=9C=E2=80=86=E2=80=98Love the Lord your God with all your=
heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all you=
r mind=E2=80=99; and, =E2=80=98Love your neighbor as yourself.=E2=80=99=E2=
=80=9D =E2=80=9CYou have answered correctly,=E2=80=9D Jesus replied. =E2=80=
=9CDo this and you will live.=E2=80=9D But he wanted to justify himself, =
so he asked Jesus, =E2=80=9CAnd who is my neighbor?=E2=80=9D In reply Jes=
us said: =E2=80=9CA man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he=
was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and =
went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the =
same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So to=
o, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the othe=
r side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when=
he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds,=
pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought =
him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii =
and gave them to the innkeeper. =E2=80=98Look after him,=E2=80=99 he said=
, =E2=80=98and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense =
you may have.=E2=80=99 =E2=80=9CWhich of these three do you think was a n=
eighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?=E2=80=9D The exper=
t in the law replied, =E2=80=9CThe one who had mercy on him.=E2=80=9D Jes=
us told him, =E2=80=9CGo and do likewise.=E2=80=9D As Jesus and his disci=
ples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha o=
pened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord=E2=
=80=99s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all =
the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, =E2=80=9C=
Lord, don=E2=80=99t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by=
myself? Tell her to help me!=E2=80=9D =E2=80=9CMartha, Martha,=E2=80=9D =
the Lord answered, =E2=80=9Cyou are worried and upset about many things, =
but few things are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is bet=
ter, and it will not be taken away from her.=E2=80=9D=E2=80=9D

Heavenly Father, send m=
e where You will. Teach me to walk in Your authority, to speak peace, and=
to love with compassion. May I serve with joy, stay rooted in Your prese=
nce, and rejoice that my name is written in heaven. In Jesus name, we pr=
ay. Amen.
