Daily Bread: Genesis 12

=E2=80=9CCommit to the Lord whatev=
er you do, and he will establish your plans.=E2=80=9D Proverbs=E2=80=AC =

=E2=80=9CThe Lord had said to Abram, =E2=80=9CGo from your country,=
your people and your father=E2=80=99s household to the land I will show =
you. =E2=80=9CI will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; =
I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless tho=
se who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on=
earth will be blessed through you.=E2=80=9D So Abram went, as the Lord h=
ad told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when=
he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the =
possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harr=
an, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abra=
m traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh=
at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The Lord appea=
red to Abram and said, =E2=80=9CTo your offspring I will give this land.=E2=
=80=9D So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him. F=
rom there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent=
, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to =
the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. Then Abram set out and conti=
nued toward the Negev. Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went=
down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. A=
s he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, =E2=80=9CI know=
what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will sa=
y, =E2=80=98This is his wife.=E2=80=99 Then they will kill me but will le=
t you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for you=
r sake and my life will be spared because of you.=E2=80=9D When Abram cam=
e to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. And =
when Pharaoh=E2=80=99s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, an=
d she was taken into his palace. He treated Abram well for her sake, and =
Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female=
servants, and camels. But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh=
and his household because of Abram=E2=80=99s wife Sarai. So Pharaoh summ=
oned Abram. =E2=80=9CWhat have you done to me?=E2=80=9D he said. =E2=80=9C=
Why didn=E2=80=99t you tell me she was your wife? Why did you say, =E2=80=
=98She is my sister,=E2=80=99 so that I took her to be my wife? Now then,=
here is your wife. Take her and go!=E2=80=9D Then Pharaoh gave orders ab=
out Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and eve=
rything he had.=E2=80=9D

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, just as You called Abram=
to step out in faith, help us to trust Your voice and follow where You l=
ead. Make us vessels of Your blessing, and let our lives bring honor to Y=
our name. Strengthen our faith to walk into the unknown, knowing You go b=
efore us. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.=0D
